Chaos in Council

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: Pandemonium prevailed in the Namakkal Council meeting held here on Friday as the Councillors, cutting across party lines, protested against the upward revision of property tax. Municipal Commissioner Varadarajan walked out from the council meeting as the councillors continued to protest against the tax revision.

Councillors, immediately after the start, criticised the municipal administration for increasing the property tax several folds during the general revision. They said that the revision would severely affect the people and trading community. Councillors including the ruling DMK members raised slogans against the municipal administration and rushed to the well of the council hall. They argued with Council Chairman R. Selvaraj and urged him to initiate steps to reduce the tax. The chairman postponed the meeting.
