CHENNAI: Following heavy rain over the last three days the Government Kilpauk Medical College premises has been inundated and become inaccessible. The college has been closed since Tuesday. According to its faculty even if the rain stops it would take many days for the water to drain off and the classes to resume. The college, located on Poonamallee High Road, has been facing such inundation during monsoon for the past decade, senior doctors and professors say. In December 2005, the college faced a similar predicament. For nearly a week the water did not recede. Then, about 40 first year MBBS students, who were lodged in one of classrooms in the college, as the college’s hostels were full, could not move out until the water receded. A two-day medical education programme scheduled in the college on Thursday was shifted to the hospital premises on the opposite side of the road. According to faculty, every year for the past decade students and teachers have been suffering. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
