Tiruvannamalai: One person was killed and more than 50 houses were damaged in the rain in Tiruvannamalai district on Friday.

“Chinnaponnu of Ammapalayam near Arni died in a wall collapse. At least 50 houses were damaged in the district and figures are still coming in,” Collector M. Rajendran told reporters.

All three upcoming reservoirs in the district - Shenbagathoppu Dam, Mrukandanathi Dam and Kuppanatham Dam - were overflowing.

Full reservoir level

The Shenbagathoppu Dam could store water up to full reservoir level as shutters had been fixed. Water was being diverted to irrigation tanks connected to these dams, the Collector said.

The Sathanur Dam, built across the Then Pennayar, started realising substantial flow from Thursday evening. By Friday morning, the reservoir was realising 7,000 cusecs as compared to the previous day morning’s 236 cusecs.

This was because of water flow from the Vaniyaru and the Narippalliyaru, tributaries of the Then Pennaiyaru.

Minimum amount of water was also being discharged from Krishnakiri dam built across the Thenpennayar in the upstream.

By Friday evening, the water flow increased and the water level stood at the height of 115.4 feet against a total height of 119 feet.

Water stored in the dam was 6,527 million cubic feet against the capacity of 7,321 million cubic feet, PWD sources said.

Rainfall registered in the district (in mm) is as follows: Vandavasi-122; Polur-120.6; Arni-120; Cheyyar-112.2; Tiruvannamalai-85; Chengam-76 and Sathanur-65.2.
