Combating terror

Is it enough if we condemn terror attacks and forget about them? India has witnessed some of the worst terrorist attacks in the past one year. But we are yet to put in place preventive measures.

The damage done by the terrorists should serve as an eye-opener for India to tackle the menace effectively. Foremost is the need to curb the casual attitude of those who are connected with security.

If, even after this attack, we do not put a federal agency in place, no one can help us. After every terror attack, our leaders promise that security will be stepped up, police will be modernised and so on. But soon there is one more intelligence failure and once again our policemen face the assault rifles of terrorists with the defunct .303 rifles.

I am afraid because now the war is raging inside my house and not on the country’s borders. My Prime Minister is telling me not to be afraid, and to keep calm and maintain peace and harmony. He is not angry and his body language conveyed that everything is under control. But my Prime Minister has Z-plus security which is perhaps why he is not agitated. I am an ordinary citizen. How can I remain calm when my house is on fire?

The people of my country are very brave and will defeat terror by going about their daily chores as if nothing has happened. Is this the way to stop terror? When will our Z-plus leaders lead from the front?

I was appalled to see the scale of carnage and gloom inflicted by the terrorists on Mumbai. I feel helpless that we as a nation could do nothing against these fanatics. I have a question for the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil. After Rahul Raj, a Bihari youth who hijacked a bus in Mumbai, was killed by the police, he said a bullet deserves to be answered by a bullet. How brave he sounded when a misguided youth with a country made pistol tried to draw the attention of the authorities to a perceived injustice! In the last two days, when terrorists ran amuck in Mumbai and its people faced some real bullets and hand grenades, what was his police force doing?

The people of our country might have cultivated an attitude of never-mind when it comes to terrorist attacks. But the latest attack should make them think again. Terrorists are proving that they are far ahead of us.
