New Zealand 262 for six

Adelaide: Aaron Redmond’s 83 gave New Zealand the start it needed after the side chose to bat on the first day of the second cricket Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, here on Friday. The visiting side promised more, but managed 262 for the loss of six wickets at stumps.

Redmond consumed 125 balls for his 83 with 14 fours and two sixes before falling to off-spinner Nathan Hauritz.

New Zealand was 101 for one at lunch, but some reckless shots saw two wickets fall within half-an-hour after lunch.

Poor judgement

Jamie How, Jesse Ryder and Peter Fulton fell to poor judgement despite Ross Taylor (44) showing some resistance at the other end.

There were a couple of reprieves for the batsmen — Matthew Hayden, playing his 100th Test, failed to hold on to a difficult chance when Fulton was on nine and Brett Lee had Taylor caught at covers off a no-ball — but they failed to capitalise on them.

Hauritz, who came in for the injured Jason Krejza for his first Test in four years, claimed two wickets. Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori kept vigil in the last hour with no more casualties.
