Form panel to monitor flood relief: TNCC

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V.Thangkabalu here on Saturday urged the State government to form a committee consisting of local MPs, MLAs and local body representatives in rain-affected districts to monitor flood relief works.

Addressing mediapersons, Mr.Thangkabalu said relief to the affected people should be routed through the committee to avoid any complaints. Thanking the Centre for sending a team to assess the damage, Mr.Thangkabalu appealed to the Centre for early release of money from the Calamity Relief Fund to enable the State to expedite relief works.

The TNCC president said rain and cyclone had caused heavy damage in the State. Many people died, hundreds of cattle perished, huts collapsed, bridges were damaged, lakes suffered breach and crops in thousands of acres were submerged. The State government had already taken up relief measures. The Congress party on its part had urged MPs, MLAs and local body representatives to coordinate with the State in providing immediate relief to the affected people.

Mr.Thangkabalu said the recent terrorist attack had showed that people should remain united in the fight against terrorism.

He criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party for trying to get political mileage from the recent attack.
