VIJAYAWADA: Farmers associations and the Telugu Desam Party leadership have said there is widespread damage to paddy due to heavy rains that hit the delta area during the last three days when the harvest season is at its peak. They demanded immediate compensation to the farmers. Kisan Service Organisation, AP, has maintained that paddy has been damaged badly in two lakh acres in Gudivada, Mudinepalli and other delta regions in the heavy rains and the major problem is discolouration. It demanded the Government to send a high-level team to estimate the extent of damage in paddy cultivation. TDP district general secretary and MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao visited the affected areas and interacted with the local farmers on Saturday. He said most of the paddy lands were half inundated by rain water and the district administration should come to their rescue immediately. He sought proper assessment of the paddy damage with active involvement of officials from the Agriculture Commissioner’s office, the Agriculture Department and Dr. N.G. Ranga Agricultural University. The TDP leaders visited Mudinepalli, Kaikaluru and Avanigadda areas, where they enquired with the farmers about the condition of the crop. Kisan Service Organisation secretary P.S.R. Das said harvesting in the coming days would not be easy in view of the wet nature of soil under the impact of rain water for several days. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
