MADURAI: In line with the State government’s attempt to promote Tamil in all spheres, Madurai Kamaraj University has now made it possible to write Ph.D. thesis in Tamil, for all science, arts and humanities subjects.

Based on the representations received from several quarters, the Research Guidelines Committee and the Ph.D. Regulations Committee of the university have recommended that research scholars be allowed to write their thesis in Tamil.

“Tamil as a language has taken a new dimension these days. It further requires conceptual contributions in different subjects, and allowing a thesis in Tamil language will enrich the language as a whole,” R. Murali, Syndicate member and convenor, Research Guidelines Committee, told The Hindu on Saturday. The permission is, however, applicable only to those subjects other than language studies such as Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.

Approval obtained

The university obtained the approval of the Academic Council and the Senate at the meetings held on October 30 and November 26 respectively, and will make a formal announcement after the Syndicate meeting scheduled for December 11.
