AIADMK opposes merger of Uthukuli with Avinashi

Tirupur: Recent government notification of Tirupur district by reorganizing Coimbatore and Erode districts, has raised its new share of disagreement.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has now come out in the open against the proposed merger of Uthukuli panchayat union with Avinashi taluk in Tirupur district during the exercise.

According to them, the relocation of Uthukuli to Tirupur district is welcome but it should have been planned in a wiser manner.

While speaking at the Corporation council meeting on Thursday evening, C. Sivasamy, councillor (Ward 35) and North rural district secretary of the party, pointed out that the integration of Uthukuli panchayat union, as planned now, would cause enormous trouble to the residents as Avinashi taluk office was located as far as 30 km from the region.

Inconvenience

“Considering the logistical inconvenience, the government should take steps to either form a separate taluk with Uthukuli town as its headquarters or bifurcate Tirupur taluk into Tirupur North and Tirupur South and then merge the Uthukuli ‘firka’ into Tirupur North taluk and Kunnathur ‘firka’ into Tirupur South taluk,” he added.

One of these steps, according to him, will thus help the people at Uthukuli panchayat union to save considerable amount of their valuable time.

New project

Mr. Sivasamy also sounded critical of the Corporation’s proposal to built a new state-of-the-art convention centre in lieu of existing Corporation Town hall situated at the heart of the city.

“At a time when the Corporation exchequer has been experiencing severe cash shortage, it’s a blunder to waste the tax payers’ money to demolish an imposing structure (Town hall) to construct another by spending many crores,” he said.
