Alappuzha, Kollam score wins

KOTTAYAM: Alappuzha defeated Thiruvananthapuram by 49 runs in the South Zone inter-district under-14 cricket tournament at the St. Ephreme’s School ground on Saturday.

In a low-scoring encounter, Thiruvananthapuram chasing 152 run for a win was bundled out for 102.

Earlier, medium-pacer Rahul Raghavan took seven for 41 to dismiss Alappuzha for 109 runs in its second innings and gave Thiruvananthapuram a sniff of victory. Alappuzha took five points for the win.

At the University ground, Kollam defeated host Kottayam by seven wickets. Kollam gained five points.

Alappuzha 107 & 109 in 23.1 overs (Fakiruddin 36, Rahul Raghavan seven for 41) bt Thiruvananthapuram 65 & 102 in 38.3 overs (Balu Babu four for 41)

Kottayam 68 & 101 in 35.3 overs (Sooraj 32, Sharath four for 22) lost to Kollam 133 in 53.3 overs (Nithin 41, Syed Ali five for 15) & 38 for three in 5.5 overs.

CRS ‘A’ triumphs

Harikumar took four wickets for 11 runs as Cochin Refineries School ‘A’ defeated NSS (Tripunithura) by seven runs and won the Refinian Cup inter-school cricket tournament at Ambalamugal on Saturday.

The scores: CRS ‘A’ (Ambalamugal) 117 (Sreejith four for 15) bt NSS (Tripunithura) 110 (Arjun 41, Harikumar four for 11).

Best player awards: Arjun (NSS, all-rounder), Kailash (CRS, bowler), Harikumar (CRS, batsman), Johnny Chacko (CRS, man-of-the-series).

Malabar in final

Abdul Rahuf and Prasoon scored two goals each as Malabar United (Kozhikode) blanked Thrissur XI 5-0 and marched into the final of the Navy Week State-level football tournament at the Parade Ground, Fort Kochi.

Rahuf’s goals came in the 15th and 82nd minutes, while Prasoon scored in a 10-minute spell beginning with the 68th. Javed (25th) netted the other goal.

Malabar United plays Golden Threads (Kochi) in Sunday’s final.

University College wins title

University College, Thiruvanathapuram, crushed Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, 23-11 while Assumption College, Changanassery, defeated Alphonsa College, Pala, 20-7 to win the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the 11th Baselius Marthoma Mathews all-Kerala inter-collegiate handball tournament at Adoor on Friday.

Shiva Prasad (University Collge) and Mridula (Assumption College) were chosen as the best players in the men’s and women’s section respectively.
