CHENNAI: The Railway Ministry has sanctioned electrification of the Vellore–Villupuram (151 route km) section.

Minister of State for Railways R. Velu told The Hindu that the Rs.97.26-crore project had been cleared as material modification of the Katpadi-Villupuram gauge conversion project.

The gauge conversion of the Vellore-Villupuram section is expected to be completed by March. Once the Vellore-Villupuram section is converted, trains could be operated to Mumbai from Nagercoil through Madurai, Villupuram, Vellore and Katpadi.
