Aparna, Gayathri win honours in painting contest

WINNERS: Winners of the Thiruvananthapuram edition of The Hindu-Young World painting competition along with chief guest and Asian School of Business director K. Ramakrishnan.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Aparna G. of Army School, Pangode, and Gayathri Nair of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya won the top honours in the junior and senior categories, respectively, of the Thiruvananthapuram edition of The Hindu-Young World painting competition held here on Saturday.

Aparna, a Class IV student, won the first prize for her painting of a school library while Gayathri of Class IX bagged the first prize for her depiction of the Thrissur Pooram.

Around 300 students from 85 schools in the district participated in the 14th edition of The Hindu-Young World painting competition presented by Lotte BooProo. The first prize winners in both the categories took home a cash prize of Rs.1,250 each.

The second prize in the junior category was bagged by Anjali Nair of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya while Shilpa Sivaraman of St. Mary’s HSS bagged the third prize.

Abhijith Ajay of Blue Mount Public School, Thonakkal, and Hawwa Shazny of Marion Villa Convent, Kumarapuram, won the second and third prizes respectively in the senior section.

The second and third prize winners won cash prizes of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 750 each respectively.

All the prize winners also took home gift hampers from Lotte BooProo.

Seven consolation prizes of Rs. 200 cash prize and gift hampers were also given away in both the categories.

Noted artists B.D. Dattan and S. Yejneswaran were the judges at the two-hour competition that began at Government Women’s College, Vazhuthacaud, at 9.15 a.m.

K. Ramakrishnan, director of Asian School of Business at Technopark, handed over the prizes to the winners.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ramakrishnan told the young artists to make use of their talent to convey social messages.

He also motivated the youngsters to always question injustice.

“Youngsters should always ask questions when something unfair happens to you and make use of your talent to raise your voice against injustice,” he said.

The Hindu, Thiruvananthapuram, Regional General Manager T.S. Lakshminarasimhan and Regional Manager (Advertising) K.K. Joshy were present at the function. The Hindu-Young World painting competition was also held in Kochi and Kozhikode on Saturday.
