Bangalore: Tennis player Rohan Bopanna, “Team Garuda”, a group of five students from R.V. College of Engineering, and badminton star Anup Sridhar had something in common on Saturday. They were all winners of the “Young Achiever 2008” award instituted by the Brigade Group and Rotary Bangalore Midtown. The function was held at St. Joseph’s Boys High School. While Mr. Bopanna and “Team Garuda” were the joint recipients of the award and split the cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000, Mr. Sridhar won the special award of Rs. 25,000 for being a young achiever. They were presented the award by Mohandas Pai, Director (Human Resource), Infosys Technologies, M.R. Jaishankar, chairman and managing director, Brigade Group and U.B. Bhatt, District Governor Rotary Bangalore Midtown. Mr. Bopanna (28) is ranked No. 2 in India (singles) and has represented the country in the Davis Cup for five years. A student of Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College, he has also played against Roger Federer at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. Team Garuda that created the “Garuda” prototype, India’s first super-mileage car that runs for 180 km on one litre of petrol will soon head for the U.S. for the prestigious SAE super-mileage competition. It will also take part in the U.K. Shell Eco-Marathon Youth Challenge. The team comprised Nishant Sarawgi, Bharat Sharma, Darshan Dwarakanath, Kayaan Kalyaniwala, Jacob Koshy and Gautham.
