Bangalore: Pushpa D. Bhat has been named the new in-charge Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University by Governor Rameshwar Thakur. The order was issued on Saturday, sources in Bangalore University told The Hindu. Dr. Bhat is likely to assume charge on Monday. H.T. Rathod, current in-charge Vice-Chancellor, will step down as his term as Dean ends on November 30. The sources said Dr. Bhat had earlier written to the Chancellor saying she did not want to be chosen for the post. She, however, withdrew it later. When contacted, Dr. Bhatt said: “I have heard the news. I am yet to receive any communication.” The nomination is, however, not without controversy. K.R. Venugopal, principal of the UVCE, is the senior-most Dean in the university. The sources said that Dr. Venugopal should have been named for the post. Allegations have been levelled against him that he submitted false caste certificate to the university. The varsity Syndicate, which met recently, did not discuss the report of the sub-committee on the allegations as the Karnataka High Court had stayed discussions on the sub-committee report. “There are certain people who want to prevent me from becoming the Vice-Chancellor,” Dr. Venugopal charged. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
