Tirupur: Traders belonging to various associations staged demonstration in front of Corporation office here on Monday to press their charter of demands.

T. Vellaiyan, president of Tamil Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai, criticised the road strengthening work being taken up along Tirupur-Palladam highway stretch for its “unscientific” approach.

Problems

“Elevating the riding surface by about six feet will cause enormous problems to the traders functioning along its sides,” he said.

The business would get severely affected once the road levels were raised considerably.

Besides, water would enter the shops easily during rainy season since the road surface was kept steeply inclined towards the edges.

Mr. Vellaiyan said that the government should enforce fiscal corrections immediately to control the steep rise in prices of essential commodities. “Owing to exorbitant rise in prices, traders are finding it very difficult to source raw materials and products for their outlets in large volumes,” the association president pointed out.

Power production

The agitators urged the government to come out with a comprehensive action plan to augment power production in the State.

The prolonged load shedding had a cascading effect on textile production in the knitwear cluster of Tirupur, which in turn reduced the spending capacity of the three lakh workers dependent on the industry.

“Owing to this, business of small and medium traders has come down,” the traders said.
