HYDERABAD: Stairs should be broad and of less height. There shouldn’t be any nosing that could cause a person to trip. Staircases should have railings on either sides. Their diameter should be convenient to hold on to with no break in between. The railing should continue for some distance after the staircase. Ramp should not be too steep and should be angled such that a person with disability can use it without anyone’s help. There should be a resting place after one foot on the ramp. Architects who do not incorporate barrier free guidelines in building plans should be penalised. Set up specialised forums, on the lines of consumer courts to deal with access issues. An accessibility guide or directory that gives detailed information on accessibility status of a particular building or place should be published. Hydraulic beds could be used in hospitals to transfer a person with disability on to X-ray tables. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
