The company to absorb engineers selected from the State in 2007

Changing business scene raises doubts

State Government intervenes in the matter

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa government on Monday said software major Wipro Technologies would keep its promise to absorb fresh engineers who were earlier recruited by the company from the State.

Doubts arose when the company reportedly sent letter to selected candidates that if they fail to join its BPO division at Kolkata by December 5, their original offer would stand cancelled.

Wipro Technologies had selected more than 1000 pre-final students in 2007 from engineering institutes across Orissa.

The decision was apparently taken on the ground of changing business environment due to the recent financial meltdown.

Candidates, however, showed apprehension that they would be given only boarder line technical jobs at Wipro BPO, which would adversely affect their core competencies.

Candidates had also complained that they aspired for a career in software development and not in the BPO sector and there was no definite commitment by Wipro to move them to software development.

A delegation of candidates had met information technology secretary Pradip Kumar Mohapatra and Chief Executive of Orissa Computer Application Centre Vishal Dev and apprised them about the situation.

Subsequently, State government intervened in the matter. “Pradeep Bahirwani, Vice President- Talent Acquisition of Wipro Technologies Ltd has promptly responded assuring that if these students do not join the BPO division, the original offer to join in Wipro software services holds good and the offered remuneration package stands,” a State government release said here on Monday.

It said, “He (Mr. Bahirwani) also has conveyed that students joining BPO will be shifted to software services within 18 months. All Engineering College authorities have been communicated accordingly.”
