Kochi: In deference to the sombre national mood in the wake of terror attacks in Mumbai, the Southern Naval Command has cancelled all further programmes associated with the Navy Day celebrations. Accordingly, the Navy Day ‘At Home’ Reception, Navy Ball and other programmes stand cancelled, informed the Navy in a media communiqué. However, the time-honoured Beating the Retreat ceremony and aerobatic display by the Naval Aerobatic team ‘Sagar Pawan’ would be held on schedule on December 4. “The Command has decided to go ahead with this ceremony as homage to all the victims of terror in the country.” The Command has extended invitation to the public to participate in the function. The Navy, in the meantime, continues to do community service. About 100 naval personnel on Monday and Tuesday undertook upkeep and maintenance of buildings at the Relief Settlement Centre, Palluruthy, to reaffirm the force’s social responsibility. Captain V.M. Doss, Director, Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology (NIAT), distributed clothes to all 350 inmates of the Relief Settlement Centre. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
