High Court seeks report on amenities in police stations

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed all Chief Judicial Magistrates in the State to visit police stations within their territorial jurisdiction and file a report with regard to the basic amenities, separate cells for women, toilet facility inside the lock-up room, ventilation facilities etc., with the Registry by December 21.

This followed a report given by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Villupuram, which was treated as a suo motu public interest litigation.

In the counter affidavit, it was stated there were 1,452 police stations, including 196 All Women Police Stations (AWPS), of which 1013 police stations were functioning in government buildings and further buildings were being constructed for 96 police stations.

A total of 439 police stations were functioning in rented buildings.

Considering the fact there were 1,452 police stations, including 196 AWPS, it became necessary in the interest of the State to call for reports in respect of the police stations as to the basic amenities, the court said.
