Seminar on Mappila folklore concludes

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: A three-day seminar on Mappila folklore organised by the Malayalam Department of Farook College in association with the University Grants Commission concluded here on Wednesday.

Kerala Folklore Academy acting chairman V.M. Kutty, while addressing a session on the sociological content in Mappila folklore, said the tunes of Mappilapattu had been influenced by Kerala folk music. ‘Kilipattu’ and ‘Mohiyudinmala’ had close similarity in content and form. Mr. Kutty also warned against commercialisation of Mappilapattu. Album manufacture was a threat to the folk music form that reflected religiosity as well as romanticism, he said.

Prof. K.M. Nasir presided.
