New Delhi: With the national Capital coming under the grip of winter, the civic authorities have readied 25 night shelters for daily wagers and homeless people in the city. This year, a total of 4,10,000 people will be able to avail the night shelter facilities, 30,000 more than the previous year, the Slum and JJ Department of the MCD said. Among the 25 camps, there will be 12 permanent shelters, 10 of which will be managed by the Slum Department and the rest by NGOs. The authorities have identified eight sites for temporary arrangement of night shelters. All the shelters have the capacity to accommodate 4,600 people a day, a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee was informed on Wednesday. The authorities have also set up three shelters exclusively for women -- in Nizamuddin, Shahzada Bagh and Jhandewalan. -- PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
