‘Storage management is a fast-growing sector in IT’

Nitte (Udupi District): Tom Clancy, vice-president (Education Services and Productivity) EMC Corporation, U.S., has said that storage management is one of the fastest growing sectors in Information Technology. He was delivering the keynote address at the inaugural function of the two-day “International Conference and Symposium on Storage Technologies (ICSST)” organised by NMAM Institute of Technology in association with EMC Corporation, USA, here on Wednesday. The conference is sponsored by the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of the Union Government. Mr. Clancy said that according to a survey, 50 per cent of the companies did not have a formal storage management group. The survey stated that managers believed only one-third of their teams were capable of doing their job. There was a shortage of experienced professionals.

He said that there were new opportunities for students in the field.

Even professors and universities would have more opportunities to look forward to in storage management. They could shape new technology through research and development.

He said that by the year 2011, 70 per cent of information would be created by individuals. But it would be the responsibility of organisations to ensure the security, privacy, reliability, and compliance of the information.

In order to address the industry’s storage knowledge gap, the EMC Academic Alliance Programme was started. Over 6,500 students had been educated under it , Mr. Clancy said.

Presiding over the inaugural function, Chancellor of Nitte University N. Vinay Hegde said that engineering students should not be frightened of the recession affecting the global economy. “The recession is not permanent. It has a maximum life span of three years,” Mr. Hegde said.
