CWG pending projects: review committee formed

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to form a group of Ministers to review the pending projects relating to the 19th Commonwealth Games to be held in 2010 from Oct. 3 to 14 to ensure that they were all completed well in time.

Acknowledging that there was a ‘major shortfall’ in the number of hotel rooms that was proposed to be made available for the participants and visitors, Union Minister and Cabinet spokesperson Kapil Sibal said “the GoM would review all the projects that were underway for the games, and come out with recommendations for speeding them up.”

The GoM would consist of S. Jaipal Reddy, and Ambika Soni, apart from Mr. Sibal himself and Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill.

It would report back to the Cabinet within two weeks. It would also hold discussions with Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi, among others. “There is an element of uncertainty. Everything must be and would be completed well before time,” Mr. Sibal said.

The GoM was set up following a detailed presentation by Mr. Gill. — Special Correspondent
