CHENNAI: Winners of the ‘Online IQ contest’ for school students, an initiative of The Hindu Newspaper in Education programme, in association with Everonn Systems’ education portal www.classontheweb.com, received their prizes at a ceremony here on Friday.

Speaking at the event, held at D.A.V. Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Subu D. Subramanian, director and senior vice-president, Aerospace Automotive and Manufacturing Business Group, Satyam Computer Services, asked students to dream big and follow their dreams with determination. “Indians are holding very senior positions in noted global corporations, doing our country proud. Our education system and advancement in technology are considered our strengths. However, all basic innovation happens in the West,” he told students.

Urging them to innovate in different spheres, he said “India has been recognised as a global services hub… you should make it a global innovations hub.”

While future innovations would largely be technology-driven, initiative and enterprise would the difference, he added. Awareness, judicious use of the Internet, focus and practice were important.

C. Satish, Senior Principal, D.A.V. Boys Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, said knowledge was the basic ingredient for success.

“Strive for excellence,” he told students. The right set of leadership skills and attitude are important for success, he added. The contest, held last month, received 4,800 entries from 250 schools.

Classes VI – VIII category:

V. Karthik, DAV Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram – I place; Naveen Shankar, DAV Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram – II place; Thomas, SBOA Junior College, Padi, and Abhinav, Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair – III place.

Classes IX and X category:

Aadithya, National Public School, Gopalapuram – I place; Nav Choudhary, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mittanamallee – II place; Viren Paul, DAV Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram – III place.

Classes XI and XII category:

Abishek Swaminathan, National Public School, Gopalapuram – I place; S Baskar, National Public School, Gopalapuram – II place; Swati Prusty, DAV Girls Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram – III place.

The prizes included certificates, trophies and cash awards. Several students won consolation prizes.
