KOCHI: Their experience of playing sevens and fives football came in very handy as the Universal Soccer School boys from Kozhikode blanked Mahatma Gandhi Sports Club (Elamakkara, Kochi) 3-0 and won the McDowell’s Celebration Futsal Friendzy tournament at the Regional Sports Centre here on Sunday. The Universal boys were fast and comfortably broke through the Kochi team’s defence. Universal’s goals came from Prasanth, captain Sharath Babu and Wahid. Enters National finalsUniversal took home Rs. 30,000 and a berth in the National finals to be held in Kolkata later. Bharath Club (Jaipur), Antivirus (Bangalore) and another qualifier from Kolkata will play the National-level finals. Mahatma Gandhi SC received Rs. 20,000. Former Indian captain I.M. Vijayan and T.N. Srinivasan, Senior GM (Sales), United Spirits, gave away the prizes. Easy for Swantons Swantons CC (Ernakulam) scored an easy 62-run win over Thripunithura CC in the Santosh Menon memorial cricket tournament in Thrissur on Sunday. In another match, AGORC, Thrissur defeated Challengers ‘B’ by eight wickets. The scores: Swantons CC 168 for eight in 30 overs (Sony 50, Saddam three for 27) bt Thripunithura CC 126 in 24.2 overs (Jomin 44, Sebastian three for 20). Challengers ‘B’ 135 for nine in 25 overs (Rajendran 34) lost to AGORC 138 for two in 15 overs (Girish 66 not out). Tvm sitting prettyThiruvananthapuram was at striking distance of gaining the vital first-innings lead over host Kottayam in the opening day of the South Zone under-14 inter-district cricket tournament in Kottayam on Sunday. Having bundled out the home team for 138 for eight in 70 overs, Thiruvananthapuram was 92 for no loss in 20 overs at close of play.
