Tamil Nadu - Chennai

Train facility

Tiruninravur is a prominent town on the periphery of Chennai. It attracts many pilgrims to the Siva and Vishnu temples. I request Southern Railway to halt 6057 Chennai-Tirupati Saptagiri Express (the first morning train) here for the benefit of passengers bound for Tiruttani, Puttur, Renigunta, Srikalahasti and Tirupati.

Storm-water drains

The Chennai Corporation has failed to maintain storm-water drains in the city and suburbs. As a consequence, many parts of the city were flooded in the recent rain. In the 62nd division alone, many areas of Kolathur were under water, because the storm-water drains were not working, and the canal adjustment to the Inner Ring Road choked with rubbish. The Corporation has not bothered to clean it, despite several representations made in April-May. Many residents in the Ambattur panchayat adjacent to the Inner Ring Road were letting out sewerage into the storm-water drains, but the Corporation is yet to act.

Music festival

The rain has stopped, and the music festival has started. The music lovers, who are unable to make it to the sabhas depend upon All India Radio and Doordarshan. Last year, AIR did a good job. Private television channels may also follow suit.

Bold decision

The government’s initiative to remove encroachments to drain out surplus water from the Ambattur lake is commendable. All residential colonies at and around Ambattur such as Korattur, Annanagar Western Extension and Mogappair were severely affected by flooding in the recent rain. Measures were taken by the Ambattur municipality to pump out water from these areas. The encroachments and the buildings constructed on the storm-water drains were also removed. The drain, which originates at the SIDCO, passes through the Ambattur estate, Srinivasanagar, Akshaya Colony, Officers’ Colony and TVS Colony before joining the Padipudunagar canal. If it is desilted and widened, the residents will not be put to any hardship next monsoon.

Lack of courtesy

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is not only incapable of supplying adequate power but also lacks courtesy. When you try to call up its office, you will find that the number is always engaged. If you contact the Assistant Engineer, he is usually evasive about when the supply will be restored. If the outage is for a long duration, his mobile phone is switched off. If you are lucky enough to contact the Chairman on his cell phone, you get some sweet talk that every effort is being made to restore supply, but no specific information. If you try after 6.00 p.m. the number is busy. At times of power failure, the TNEB can inform the consumers when the supply will be restored.

Foot overbridge

The subway on Doraiswamy Road at the northern end of the Mambalam railway station was closed because of water-logging for three days. This subway connects T. Nagar in the east with West Mambalam, K.K. Nagar and Rangarajapuram in the west. As the subway remained shut, no public transport was available for commuters to go to T. Nagar and Mount Road. It is high time that the State government and the Railways took up construction of a foot over-bridge, connecting West Mambalam and T. Nagar, besides the Mambalam station.

Rail link

Sriperumpudur is developing fast as an industrial area. Several companies have set up shop, and some big companies may launch more projects. At present, 20,000 workers commute to the area by road. This figure may double in five years. Though the metro transport has been extended to the town, it will not be enough. The only solution is to put this town on the railway map by connecting it with Avadi. This scheme is pending with the government for years. It is high time that the State Government made efforts at executing this scheme immediately.

Unfinished work

The re-laying of the cement platform on C.P.R. Road at Alwarpet, opposite the Nilgiris Depot Stores, is yet to be completed, though the work began five months ago. The cement slabs dug out of the old platform are lying on the road.

I hope the Chennai Corporation will soon take steps to complete the work and make the platform safe for pedestrians.
