CPI(M) should clarify: IUML

KOZHIKODE: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has said it is high time the Communist Party of India (Marxist) made clear its political equations with the Congress in the light of the victories posted by the Congress in recent Assembly polls.

IUML State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty said here on Tuesday that the CPI(M) owed an explanation to voters on this point since it had tried to destabilise the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government by withdrawing support to it recently.

The CPI(M) had also opposed the Congress on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The CPI(M) was now moving closer to political outfits that had been allies of the BJP till recently.

“People suspect that the CPI(M) would move into the BJP camp after the general election. Which is why they should make clear their equations with the Congress,” Mr. Kunhalikutty said.

The League leader said the results of the recent Assembly elections had vindicated his party’s policy to support the Congress in order to strengthen secularism.

The election results clearly reinforced people’s commitment to secularism.

BJP’s hopes of making political capital out of terrorist attacks by whipping up communal passions had been dashed, Mr. Kunhalikutty said.
