SINGAPORE: Myanmar’s military government has informed democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi that her “appeal for release is being considered.” This was conveyed to her lawyer earlier this week, according to U Nyan Win, spokesman of Ms. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD). Mr. Nyan Win told The Hindu over the telephone from Yangon on Friday that she had filed the appeal on October 9 this year. This was the first-ever such move by the Nobel Peace Laureate against her prolonged detention by the junta over an indefinite period. It was an “individual appeal” as provided for under the current laws, and there was “nothing political” in it on behalf of the NLD as such. Mr. Nyan Win said Ms. Suu Kyi’s lawyer was now waiting to hear from the Council of Ministers. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
