Power cut and its effect on students

B.S. Satish Kumar

RAMANAGARA: The erratic power supply has not only affected the crops, but also the studies of children in villages. When this correspondent visited the government high school in Biligumba village of Ramanagara on Friday, the School Development Monitoring Committee was having a meeting to discuss how the erratic power supply had hit the studies of their wards.

SDMC chairman Dhananjaya told The Hindu after the meeting that the school teachers had brought to the committee’s notice that several students were lagging behind in studies. They were not doing their home work properly.

The main reason being given by students was that they did not have power at homes when they have mood to study.

Concern

Mr. Dhananjaya said this had become a cause of concern for parents as the school enjoyed the good reputation of recording cent per cent results in the SSLC examination.

Mr. Dhananjaya also expressed concern that the school, which has been given 10 computers for training students, was unable to use the facility due to the erratic power supply.

Meanwhile, former Ramanagara taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Siddalinge Gowda noted that poor families in the villages mainly depended on kerosene lamps for lighting during power cuts.

But the poor families were getting only three litres of kerosene a month from fair price shops.

He suggested that the Government at least increase the monthly kerosene quota in rural areas, if it is not possible to improve the power supply situation.
