Chitradurga: The district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat has proposed writer Chidanandamurthy for the presidentship of 75th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan to be held here.

A meeting held here on Sunday to nominate a person from the district for the post arrived at a consensus in this regard. At the meeting, president of the district unit of the parishat K.M. Veeresh said that as other districts, Chitradurga too should select a suitable person and proposed Dr. Chidanandamurthy for the presidentship. He said that the district committee did not have the authority to select, but only send its recommendations to the State committee to choose from the list of names for the presidentship. During the debate, several people stated that as the sammelan was being held in Chitradurga, a person from the district should be selected for the presidentship.

A few of them argued that with the district being backward and many people hailing from backward communities, the district committee should propose a person from the backward communities for the presidentship. This would help in giving representation to backward classes in such prestigious events, they said.

Meerasabihalli Shivanna, writer, said that the nomination should not be based on any caste or region, but on the person’s background in working for the cause of Kannada.

Backing Dr. Chidanandamurthy, he said the writer, with his exemplary contribution for the growth of Kannada literature, was best suited for presidentship. He was one of the prominent leaders who had fought for the classical language status for Kannada, Mr. Shivanna. Though, a few persons said that it was better to propose writers Baragur Ramchandrappa and L. Basavaraj along with Dr. Chidanandamurthy, most of them stressed the need for “showing unity among the people” here by proposing one person for the presidentship.
