Bus facility to Maraimalai Nagar - Reader's Mail

Maraimalai Nagar is an important industrial and residential locality on GST Road. It lacks proper transport, road and drainage facilities.

New bus routes have been introduced from Chengalpet to Tambaram, T. Nagar, Mandaveli and Broadway. I request the MTC authorities to consider the introduction of route number 570A (Maraimalai Nagar and Avadi) for the benefit of the commuters to places such as Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, Mogappair and Ambattur.

LPG cylinder bookings

As per I.O.C instructions, a gas cylinder for domestic use should be booked 21 days after the previous delivery. But, several gas agencies are booking orders only after 25 days . They also take another 10 days to deliver the cylinder. It takes more than 30 days to get a refill. In big families, a cylinder lasts only for 16 or 17 days.

For those who have two cylinders, no kerosene is being supplied.

This leads to a lot of problems.

Poor service

The State Transport Corporation (Tamil Nadu) is operating a separate fleet of special express buses at frequent intervals between Koyambedu and Tirupati. These daily services have pushback seats, television sets and small fans. However, the TV sets and fans in several buses do not work. The window curtains are also dirty. Every passenger is charged Rs. 100 for a trip. Several video luxury coaches have weak batteries. The authorities concerned should make efforts to improve the services.

MRTS stations need attention

MRTS services from Beach to Velachery are very popular among the residents of the city. But, in most of the railway stations, the roofs leak during the rains.

Although crores of rupees are being spent to install new facilities such as escalators, many of them have not been working in some stations for months. Besides, the daily and season tickets that are issued are very dull. Commuters are unable to read what has been printed on the ticket.

The authorities concerned should do the needful.

Painful delay

The postponement to clear Mayiladuthurai-Villupuram section has come as a shock to several people. The conversion work has been going on for the past three and a half years.

This project has been neglected, causing extreme hardship to the public. Had persons concerned evinced interest, the work would have been completed by now, which is unfortunate.

Increase frequency

Bus route 41D (Mandaveli — Avadi) plying through D.M.S., Gemini, Anna Nagar and Ambattur serves students, government servants and the general public. But the frequency is inadequate (once in 40 minutes). We request the MTC to increase the frequency at the earliest.

Repair roads at the earliest

The recent rain has hit the entire State, badly affecting all low-level areas. This has become almost a regular thing every year. The State government has approached the Centre for financial assistance to make good losses to farmers and repair damaged highways.

However, even before the recent rain, there were several areas where the roads were in a very bad condition.

A case in point is Bharathmatha Road. The 2-km-stretch between the Tambaram Sanatorium Railway Station on the eastern side and up to Hundred Feet Road of Tambaram-Velachery Main Road was always in a pathetic condition. The recent rain has only worsened the situation.

The new bridge over the tracks at the Tambaram Sanatorium Railway Station is all set to be opened. The road should be widened at many places and re-laid before that.

The municipal authorities should act fast.

Side roads near subway pathetic

After much struggle on the part of the residents of Adambakkam, the subway near the St. Thomas Mount Railway Station was constructed. It is proving to be very useful to vehicle-users. However, the two side roads at the ground level branching off from the overbridge above the subway from near the St. Thomas Mount Railway Station on the sides of this subway are very narrow and in bad condition.

They are full of potholes. As these two stretches are short-cuts to places in Adambakkam and other areas, several two-wheelers and even cars and vans use these roads, resulting in frequent traffic holds-ups. These two stretches have to be made even with cement mortar. One-way traffic rule should also be strictly followed.

Streetlights not functioning

Hundreds of vehicles regularly ply via Alwarpet, TTK and Mowbarrys Road overbridge. Crores of rupees are being spent on the rods, including the installation of high-mast lamps.

But, two such lamps fitted with several 400 w mercury lamps are not functioning in the above areas for the past six months. Accidents occur often owing to poor visibility. Authorities concerned should do the needful at the earliest.

Foot overbridge needed

Innocent rail users are being harassed by the Railway Police at Perambur Loco Works Railway Station. As there is no foot overbridge at the station, commuters have to cross the tracks to buy the tickets and reach the platform.

The Railways are not providing a foot overbridge, but are particular about stopping people from crossing the track.

Several office-goers and students are detained by the Railway police in the morning and taken to the police outpost at the ICF to pay penalty.

If the Railways have abundant police force, they should be deployed at stations where people are targeted by anti-socials. Recently, a couple using a foot overbridge at the Korattur station were waylaid by anti-socials. M.S. Latha
