Court directive to Legal Studies Director

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Director of Legal Studies to ensure maintenance of proper teaching standards and holding of classes and qualified teachers are made available to teach ML students in the Dr.Ambedkar Government Law College here.

Disposing of a public interest litigation petition, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.K.Ganguly and Justice K.Chandru directed the Vice-Chancellor of the law university to depute a team of officials to assess the situation with regard to the standard of teaching and the overall condition with regard to the ML course.

In his petition, Dr.G.Krishnamurthy sought proper management and conduct of ML degree course.

He sought a direction to the authorities to run the course and classes as per the rules and regulations of the law university before conducting the examinations.

The authorities had no right to conduct examinations without verifying whether the required number of classes was conducted.

P.Maridoss of Ramanathapuram district and 20 others have filed an anticipatory bail application before the Principal Sessions Judge here in connection with an incident relating to alleged assault of police officials in October last. The petitioners, some of them who were now advocates and others were studying law course, said the Kilpauk police here had registered an FIR in which it was stated that students were quarrelling in a hotel on Purasawalkam High Road and two of them were taken to the police station. Following this, students obstructed traffic demanding the release of those detained.

Later, the police released the students. It was then the police were attacked by students.

The petitioners said they were innocent.

The matter has been posted for Tuesday.
