Ernakulam is champion again

The Ernakulam team which won the overall team title in the 52nd Kerala State schools athletics championship.

CHALAKUDY: The verdict did not surprise anybody. Ernakulam was once again Kerala’s champion district at the State schools athletics championship and Kothamangalam’s St. George HSS, the State’s champion school for the fifth successive year.

But a few minutes after being carried around the Carmel Stadium here by his triumphant athletes on Wednesday evening, Raju Paul, the St. George School coach, came up with a surprise comment.

“This champion school award this year is god’s gift,” said Raju. “Six of our athletes suffered injuries after they landed here. And two before our arrival. We didn’t think it would be so easy.”

St. George and its neighbour at Kothamangalam, Mar Basil HSS, played a big role in Ernakulam’s triumph, for the fifth successive time, in the general schools division.

Kannur Sports Division emerged as the best team in the sports division while Government Vocational HSS, Kannur, was the top school in the category.
