Police stand on remand upheld

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has upheld the Delhi police’s stand of taking the September 13 serial blasts accused on remand separately in separate cases related to them, saying that “it would be difficult to accept that all the blasts form part of one case.”

Two of the accused had sought quashing of October 16 order of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) here extending their police remand beyond the statutory limit of 15 days.

The two accused petitioners — Zeeshan Ahmed and Mohammed Shakeel — were arrested by the Delhi Police in September for their alleged involvement in the serial bomb blasts at different places in the Capital.

“I am of the considered view that the investigation being at the stage of infancy, it would be difficult to accept the proposition of the petitioners that separate occurrences of the serial blasts form part of the same transaction as this is a stage where more leverage should be given to the police, specially looking into the sensitivity of a case of this nature,” Mr. Justice Kailash Gambhir observed.

“Any interference at this stage by the Court would result in creating bottlenecks in the way of the probe which ultimately will obliterate the process of investigation,” he further stated.
