Staff Reporter

They will also carry suggestions for customers applying for credit cards and loans

CHENNAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Chennai region, will soon be distributing pamphlets on Banking Ombudsman service in all the branches of various banks in the city to enlighten the customers about the service and their rights.

The pamphlets to be made available in the banks and also distributed in the camps conducted by the RBI would have information about reasons for which complaints against banks could be lodged. The reasons include levying of charges for services without prior information and delay in sanction or disbursement of loan.

The pamphlets would be distributed to all branches of about 50 banks in the city in about two months.

RBI officials said that though such pamphlets had been distributed among the public in the past, the brochures released this year would also have the pamphlets have suggestions for customers applying for credit cards and loans.

Besides ascertaining whether the interest is fixed for entire period of loan or floating interest rate, the customers must also find out about the charges applicable for repayment of loans in advance, the officials said.

An RBI official said that the brochures would also have guidelines for customers applying for credit cards.

The applicants must have knowledge of various applicable charges such as annual fee, service charges and cash withdrawal charge and contact details of the bank in case of loss, theft or misuse of the cards. There are also plans to instruct the banks to provide the pamphlets to applicants for loans and credit cards.

On the banking ombudsman service, he said customers must write to the bank concerned about their grievance. If the complaint is not redressed within a month or the customers may approach the banking ombudsman of RBI, Chennai region, (25395964) or email to bochennai@rbi.org.in, the official said.
