Four persons arrested for murder of woman

CHENNAI: Four persons were arrested on Thursday in the case relating to the murder of a woman at Elephant Gate in the city on Wednesday. Two brothers of the victim are among those arrested.

Commissioner of Police K. Radhakrishnan said a dispute over taking charge of the ‘maistry’ position in a lorry shed led to the murder of Parameswari (40), on the Water Tank Street around 4.30 a.m. on Wednesday.

A special team, formed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Flower Bazaar) Prem Anand Sinha arrested S.Kamaraj (25), S.Thambidurai (25), S.Selvaraj (30) and M.Gopi (28). On the confession of the prime accused, Kamaraj, the weapon used to kill the woman was recovered from near the Basin Bridge Railway Station.

Selvaraj and Thambidurai were angered over their elder sister, Parameswari, refusing to part with the maistry’s post in a lorry shed. They conspired to kill her along with Gopi and Kamaraj. The accused slit the throat of the woman and later admitted her to a hospital in a bid to escape police action.

In another murder that took place in a beauty parlour in K.K. Nagar police station limits on October 10, police claimed to have unearthed the conspiracy. Senthilkumari alias Chitra was found murdered in the parlour at Virugambakkam. Investigations revealed that two persons, identified as Elangovan and Ravikumar, had committed the murder.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said Elangovan’s uncle, Kodiswaran, had given some money to Chitra after the duo entered into a relationship. On October 10, Elangovan went to seek Rs.1 lakh from Chitra under the instructions of Kodiswaran.

However, the woman refused to part with money. This led to an argument and in the melee that followed, Elangovan hit Chitra with an iron rod, killing her on the spot. Before fleeing, he and his friend, Ravikumar, took Rs.1 lakh from the cash box and some jewellery worn by the victim. A team has been formed to arrest the accused, he added.
