The five-storeyed building, with a stilt parking facility, has been built on the premises that previously housed ARR complex at 46 North Usman Road. The corner plot abuts Vasan Street on the southern side. CMDA officials said the plan approval sought was for the use of the building for commercial purposes. Though the CMDA issued notice about the violation several months ago, the builder proceeded with the construction. On Friday, a dozen workers of the CMDA demolished the walls on all four floors. At the entrance on North Usman Road, a staircase has been constructed. A CMDA press release said the unauthorised portions including the staircase on the front setback space were demolished with the assistance of the Chennai Corporation and the police. Granite staircases, escalators and air-conditioner vents have been provided in the building, work on which is nearing completion. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
