Thousands flock to the State annually for New Year

State in touch with Centre for more paramilitary forces

PANAJI: The Goa government decided on Saturday to ban beach parties during Christmas and New Year in view of the serious terror threat perception.

“After taking stock of the situation and considering all aspects, we have decided that beach parties will not be allowed from December 23 to January 5,” Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told presspersons outside his official residence after the daily high-level meeting to review security arrangements in the State on Saturday. Thousands flock to the State’s coastline annually to usher in the New Year.

Strong pressure

The legislature wing of the ruling Congress had recommended the ban.

But the Chief Minister, under strong pressure from some sections of the ruling coalition and the tourism industry, on Thursday sought to withdraw an order issued by the Collector banning beach parties, fireworks and other celebrations on south Goa beaches for Christmas and New Year.

No further curbs

Home Minister Ravi Naik clarified after Saturday’s meeting that there were no restrictions on festivities. “There is no ban on celebrations in hotels. The traditional celebrations too will go on as usual,” Mr. Naik said in reply to a question.

The Chief Minister and Home Minister repeatedly said that Goa continued to be a safe destination for tourists and that security had been tightened all along the State.

The Chief Minister confirmed that the State government was in contact with the Central government for three more companies of paramilitary forces to be stationed in Goa during the festival season.
