Officials seize fake soft drinks

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: The Corporation officials seized low 145 bottles of fake consumer bottles of reputed brands containing low quality soft drinks and 300 kg of plastic material of less than 20 microns from shops situated along P.N. Road here on Friday.

Official sources said that the soft drinks, prepared using low-grade colorants, preservatives and flavours, and non-purified water, were seized from a TASMAC bar.

Samples of the soft drinks would be sent to government recognised food laboratories for scientific assessment. City Health Officer K.R. Jawaharlal said that an investigation was launched into the incident under Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, to trace the manufacturers of the soft drinks.

Plastic material

The plastic materials like cups and covers were seized from grocery stores, bakeries and cafeterias. The health officials let off the shop keepers with a warning that fines would be imposed on them if they were again found selling food items in plastic materials of less than 20 microns.
