‘No’ to war

This refers to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s reiteration that nobody wants war (Dec. 24). But those who want to fish in troubled waters want a war with Pakistan. If media reports are true, the Pakistan army and the ISI want a war. The manufacturers and the sellers of arms and ammunitions want a war. Fundamentalist forces on either side of the border want war. Except those who dream to make the one-time brethren of both sides live in harmony and peace, everyone seems to want war.

Pakistan’s attitude shows that it continues to be ruled by the army and that democracy is still a distant dream there. The Zardari government’s denial of the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the Mumbai terror attack has no takers. More interesting is the Taliban’s assurance of help to Pakistan against India. India should be wary of jumping into a war with Pakistan on provocation by its leaders. It should take advantage of the international support it has to make Pakistan accountable.
