Dealing with terror

India’s measured response to the Mumbai terror attacks deserves praise because it has exposed Pakistan’s true colours. The Pakistani leadership’s flip-flop on Ajmal Amir Iman, the captured terrorist, and its dealings vis-À-vis the terror outfits operating from its soil are proof of its doublespeak. The icing on the cake is the reported statement by the Taliban that it will back Pakistan in the event of a war between India and Pakistan. What better proof does the world need of the presence of terrorists in Pakistan? Time and again, Pakistan claims that it is a victim of terrorism. What prevents it from eradicating terrorism from its soil?

Since the Mumbai terror attacks, all sections including the media, politicians, and the intelligentsia have added fuel to the raging fire. But no concrete solution to combat terrorism has emerged. The passing of stringent laws will not prevent a terrorist from acting. He is a terrorist because he has no fear of the law. The focus should be on strengthening our security and modernising the police force. We should rise above caste, religion and region and stay united.
