PROUD MOMENT: R. P. Goenka (left), Chairman ‘Emeritus’, and his son Sanjeev Goenka, Vice-Chairman of RPG Group, at the award function in Kolkata on Tuesday.

KOLKATA: Even as he accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award, Ramaprasad Goenka, one of the doyens of Indian industry, expressed his regrets about the opportunities that he has missed in life.

At a unique function, which saw the father sharing honours at the same forum with younger son Sanjiv (who won an award for corporate leadership), the senior Goenka said: “I could achieve more than what I did achieve. Opportunities were immense and today, I feel I passed them”.

It was important for those running family businesses to be educated.

“Enterprises must be run professionally,” he said fondly mentioning that his two grand daughters, both of whom have graduated from Wharton, cannot wait to test the waters. “They are insisting that they be inducted,” the doting grandfather said with mock consternation.

The awards were given by The Sunday India and the Indian Institute of Planning & Management (IIPM) which has instituted a series on Regional Excellence Awards.

This was the first such award.
