He is an example of motivation and emulation

C. Jaisankar

Sheer determination and commitment made him to devote much of his time at least after retirement

PROUD MOMENT: Jeyaraman receiving Ph.D. from Governor Surjith Singh Barnala at Alagappa University on Wednesday.

KARAIKUDI: In spite of a bright future, promotion and other benefits for those completing Ph.D. , not many show interest to do research programmes. But, a 66-year-old former Librarian stands as an example of motivation for others to take up research projects by completing Ph.D. at Alagappa University at this age.

Many of VIPs, academicians, professors and students were excited when S. Jayaraman got up on to the stage to receive Ph.D. degree from Governor Surjith Singh Barnala at the convocation held on Wednesday.

Joyful tears rolled down from the eyes of his wife Seethlakshmi (58), who was witnessing the event from a visitors’ area, to see his husband’s commitment in completing the task. The Vice-Chancellor P. Ramasamy and other dignitaries on the dais also gestured as a sign of acknowledgement.

“I will not gain anything with this degree as I have already retired from the service. But I feel, this is a pinnacle of achievement in my entire career,” Mr. Jayaraman told The Hindu on Friday.

“Successful completion of Ph.D. after retirement is rare in Alagappa University. It will not only give mental satisfaction to him but also motivate others to pursue research programmes,” says the Vice-Chancellor.

Though he registered for research about 15 years ago, he couldn’t concentrate on it due to work pressure and a few other reasons. However, sheer determination and commitment made him devote much of his time at least after the retirement.

Mr. Jayaraman added that S. Mohan, who has produced a record number of Ph.D. scholars and Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA, were the source of inspiration for his commitment.
