KRISHNAGIRI: Though nearly 700 cattle and a number of motors in the pumpsets have been stolen in the district, the police have so far recovered only 2 cattle, farmers who participated at the grievances day meeting in Krishnagiri on Friday complained.

Raising the issue, Rama Gounder, district president of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, said that in the absence of police action the district administration should give them free insurance cover.

The farmers also said that the registration of sugarcane was being denied by the Thirupatthur Sugar Mills and appealed to the district authorities to get permission from the Sugar Commission for registration.

Some farmers alleged that a few private sugar mills prevailed upon the bank officials not to give loans to farmers who were not supplying sugarcane to them.

They said that the Periya Thalapadi Co-operative Bank was not giving them loan stating that they were not coming under its jurisdiction. For sanctioning loans up to Rs. 50,000, the officials were insisting on legal opinion and other formalities.

The farmers were spending at least Rs. 2,000 for getting legal opinion and other documents required by the bank authorities.

However, officials from the co-operative banks said that they asked legal opinion only for loans beyond Rs. 50,000.

The farmers said that often wild elephants and pigs were damaging the crops in Thali, Denkanikottai and Anchetti and the Forest department was not giving them compensation.

The forest officials said that solar fencing had been put up in Royakottai and Anchetti area for 25 km and fencing work was under way for another 11 km.

According to the government directive, farmers had to maintain the solar fencing.

But the farmers in Denkanikottai and Thali were not cooperating with the department.

The officials also said that the Forest department was ready to give compensation to the farmers for their crop loss due to elephants and pigs.

A set of applications had been sent for approval. Once they get the approval from the higher authorities and received the funds, the amount would be distributed in February, 2009, they added.

The farmers from Piyur complained that they were being denied name transfer in pattas. District Revenue Officer S. Nagarajan, who presided over the grievances meet, asked the revenue officials to look into the issue within 15 days.

Besides officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture departments, Kaveripattinam MLA T.A. Meganathan of PMK also attended the meeting.
