COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation will resume its drive to ban the manufacture, sale and use of plastic items below 20 microns in the city. This was announced by Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra in the Council on Wednesday, in response to queries from Councillors as to what was the civic body’s position on this issue. Stay orderWith the stay on the earlier drive vacated by the High Court, the Corporation now wanted to sensitise the public more on the ill-effects of plastics. At the same time, it would also crackdown on the sale and use of plastic bags or other items below 20 microns. The Corporation would also ask commercial establishments to desist from using such plastic materials, especially carry bags to pack items. Teams of the civic body’s health wing would use micron meters to check whether the items used were below 20 microns. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
