CHANGE FOR BETTER LIKELY: Parking of vehicles near Wallace Garden I Street may become more orderly, once the multi-level parking is in place. Chennai: After two rounds of unsuccessful tenders for multi-level parking facilities in the city, the Chennai Corporation has now received bids that have cleared the technical evaluation. The multi-level parking projects have been planned on Wallace Garden First Street near Apollo Hospitals, off Greams Road, and at Broadway bus stand. Separate tenders were floated for the projects. As for the facility proposed near the Government Estate, the Corporation is yet to finalise the project structure as a consultant is studying the financial viability. According to Corporation officials, the multi-level parking facility planned on Wallace Garden First Street has received a bid from a consortium formed by Marg Group and Apollo Hospitals. The facility proposed at Broadway bus stand has received a bid from Kolkata-based Simplex Projects. Though these bids have cleared the technical evaluation, the financial bids are yet to be opened. The facility at Wallace Garden will have an area to accommodate 360 equivalent car spaces while the one at Broadway will have 780 equivalent car spaces. This would include the parking needs for any commercial development and retail space planned inside the parking facility. The Corporation has fixed the parking fees at Rs.20 for cars for the first hour of parking, Rs.30 for two hours, Rs.40 for three hours and Rs.50 for more than three hours. Similarly, two-wheeler parking would cost Rs.5 for the first hour, Rs.10 for two hours, Rs.15 for three hours, Rs.20 for four hours and Rs.25 for five hours and more. The private developer would be given two years to construct the facility from the date of awarding contract. Parking fees could be increased by five per cent every year but would have to be rounded off to the nearest multiple of five. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
