“Congress office attack case shifted to CB-CID”

Coimbatore: A case relating to pelting of stones at Sathyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai and another case relating to the dumping of half-burnt congress flags and threat messages on the house of Congress MP, S.K. Karvendan at Dharapuram have been transferred to the State Crime Branch CID, said K.P. Jain, Director-General of Police, here on Friday.

He was talking to reporters after reviewing the progress in pending cases and maintenance of law and order in Coimbatore City and Range with Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Pramod Kumar, DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, P. Sivanandi, Superintendents of Police, Avinash Kumar (Erode), A.G. Babu (the Nilgiris), K. Shanmugavel (in-charge of Coimbatore Rural), Deputy Commissioners of Police, Coimbatore City S. Rajendran (Law and Order) and P. Nagarajan (Headquarters).

On December 25, K.N. Natarajan, personal assistant to the Member of Parliament preferred a complaint with the Dharapuram police stating that two half burnt Congress flags and six pamphlets were found strewn inside the house.

Based on the complaint, the Dharapuram police had registered a case under sections 285 (Negligent conduct with fire or any combustible matter), 506 (ii) (Criminal Intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of Indian Penal Code.

Similarly, 11 members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) were arrested on charges of pelting stones on Sathyamurthy Bhavan that housed the office of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. In this connection, the police had registered a case under sections 147 (unlawful assembly), 148 (unlawful assembly with deadly weapons), 323 (causing hurt) and 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code.

Considering the sensitive nature of the issue as the investigation required to be carried out through out the State, the case was transferred to the CB-CID, a police press release added.
