Villagers block road for relief

FOR RELIEF: Villagers resorting to road roko at Gandarvakottai near Pudukottai on Friday.

PUDUKOTTAI: Villagers resorted to ‘road roko’ agitation at three places in the district on Friday, demanding immediate disbursement of flood relief .

Traffic on Gandarvakottai–Thanjavur sector was hit for a while, when the villagers, a majority of them women, resorted to the stir. Revenue Divisional Officer R. Baskaran and Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Mahendran rushed to the spot and held talks with the villagers. The agitation was withdrawn following the officials’ assurance that immediate action would be taken to disburse the relief to the affected families.

A similar stir was staged at Karambakudi and Mullankurichi near Alankudi. Officials, who went to the spot, pacified the villagers.
