Cabinet clears pay hike for Lt. Governors

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for increasing the salary and allowances of Lieutenant Governors, in the light of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.

They would now get Rs. 80,000 per month on a par with the Secretaries in the Central government. They were till now getting Rs.26, 000 a month.

The hike is with effect from January 2006. Announcing the decision, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said the Cabinet and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had taken up a record number of items for consideration during 2008. The Cabinet had considered 518 items and the CCEA 254 items.
