NEW DELHI: The newly-appointed National Students’ Union of India president Hibi Eden on Saturday said the era of nominating students to posts in the organisation had come to an end and now all positions would be filled through elections. Addressing a press conference at the NSUI headquarters here, Mr. Eden said his immediate focus would be on conducting elections for various posts in the students’ organisation. Asserting that the NSUI office-bearers would be held accountable for the work assigned to them, he said their performance in implementation of the policies and programmes would form the yardstick for their promotion and elevation within the organisation. Asked if the NSUI would constitute its units at the higher secondary level in schools, Mr. Eden said the organisation for now would concentrate only on colleges and universities. “But it would also go to the schools if need be to inculcate the spirit of selfless service to the nation and patriotism in students,” he added. “We believe that schools should not be treated as a place for doing politics; instead all efforts should be made to train students at the secondary level to excel in studies and prepare themselves for doing service to society,” he said. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
